I was having a coffee with a colleague from work the other week and discussing Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP). She wants to learn NLP improve her martial arts skills and to train students to do the same. She said that “A lot of these practitioner training sites on the net seem like sleazy sale sites. Can you give me some advice on how to find legitimate NLP training? Or is the whole NLP thing rubbish? I just want someone to give me their honest opinion about what they really think about NLP and how to find a reputable person to learn NLP from? “
I agreed with her about the sleazy sales sites and explained how that was mostly due to the large amount of internet marketer sites trying to get a slice of the NLP training market. The good NLP sites are still there you just need to dig deeper to find them or seek them out in a moderated NLP forum.
NLP has been shown as a quick fix on national television around the world and “NLP” has since became the fix all magic pill. NLP is wonderful and a great system to use. In my opinion it is something you grow from and into at the same time. The reason I say this is that NLP is the study of the human excellence with the purpose of replicating that excellence and teaching it to others. The way it is taught is the secret formula that makes it quick but you still have a cycle of learning that needs to be followed.
If you are serious about learning NLP you cannot do it from a book, audio file or a DVD. You can learn about it and get an understanding of it, but to really learn NLP, you have to experience it.
NLP is a full body learning experience.
Knowing what I know now, I would do my training without learning about it first. Give your chosen trainer a blank canvas to work with, I know my trainer, James Tsakalos from NLP Melbourne, had fun uninstalling a lot of bad learning’s, preconceived ideas and flawed learning that I had picked up over the years.
My advice is to “RUN” away from any practitioner or trainer who promises to instantly fix everything in your life with it, especially if they only do it over the internet through DVD’s, books and tapes. They are fine for later on when you are consolidating your learning’s.
Remember, you can learn about it from a book, though it is “very highly recommended” that to really learn NLP you need to experience it with a well experienced human being.
